I-T teams conduct surveys of leading traders, impose penalty

Amritsar: With a view to augument the collection of tax deducted at source (TDS) in the region and ensure the compliance of rules and regulations pertaining to TDS by the trading community, the teams of income tax officials, under the direction of Dr Tarundeep Kaur, joint commissioner of Income Tax (JCIT)-TDS, conducted surveys of two leading trading firms in Amritsar.

The first survey, led by Prem Malik, a Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, was conducted upon Kandhari Beverages, a leading distributor of soft drinks in the northern region while the other, under the supervision of Ajay Kumar, an Income Tax officer of Amritsar, was conducted upon Randhawa Hospital, a leading name in healthcare sector, on Mall Road here.

In both the surveys, gross irregularities pertaining to TDS were detected by the investigating teams.

According to information given by the income tax department, both the erring trading firms were asked to deposit the pending amounts of TDS along with amounts of fine imposed upon them. Dr Tarundeep Kaur also added that Amritsar region has been lagging behind in the collection of TDS and hence, they were planning to conduct more surveys of many leading firms in the holy city in the days to come.
