Seminar organised on controlling obesity at GNDU

Amritsar:The department of sports, medicine and physiotherapy of the Guru Nanak Fev University (GNDU), organised a two-day seminar, titled “obesity: control and exercise” in its seminar hall, which focused upon the need of controlling obesity at its inception, which can lead to many other serious disorders, which may further prove fatal.

Delivering the key note address after inaugurating the seminar, Prof N S Tung, dean of academic affairs of the university, stated that though obesity was a world phenomenum, however, it had attained alarming proportions in Indian society. He asserted that obesity had spread like an epidemic here and the need of the hour was to curb it anyhow.

Prof Jitendra Sharma, principal of DAV institute of physiotherapy, however, stressed the need of nipping obesity in the bud and taking harsh preventive measures before it could give way to many other serious health disorders. Dr Indu Talwar from Punjab University, Chandigarh, however, preferred to identify the basic reasons behind obesity first and then resort to treatment. She highlighted the need of resorting to regular exercise on daily basis, while Dr Shyamal Kholey, head of the host department, underlined the horrible consequences of obesity that one, afflicting from it, may have to come across. He too, called for putting a check upon the eating habits and shed junk food, which according to him had become a part and parcel of our life these days.

Others who delivered useful suggestions to prevent obesity, included Dr Ajay Prasad Gautam, Dr Archna Sharma, Dr Manjula Uppal, Dr maman Paul, Ramanpreet and Jaspreet Kaur.
