AAP candidates to put up tents to keep vigil on EVMs in strong rooms, says H S Phoolka

Jalandhar: Blaming Election Commission of India (ECI) for laxity in keeping 24X7 vigil, senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader H S Phoolka on Tuesday said that the party candidates would put up tents to outside strong rooms in respective constituencies to ensure foolproof security of EVMs.

Phoolka along with party workers paid a visit to strong rooms in different assembly segments of Jalandhar on Tuesday and said that AAP leadership has asked the candidates to stay put in tents outside strong rooms.

The senior AAP leader said that the district election authorities were not following the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in maintaining three-tier security of the strong rooms. The ECI also failed to put up water proof tents outside strong rooms, where candidates could put up for vigil.

“I have brought this matter to the notice of the District Electoral Officer (DEO) cum Deputy Commissioner Kamal Kishor Yadav and the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) V K Singh. Neither videography nor any checking was being done by the para-military force deployed on duty,” he said.

Talking to the media, Phoolka said that he visited the sites of strong rooms in Jalandhar West, Nakodar, Shahkot and Phillaur assembly constituencies and found blatant violations of SOP meant to ensure the security of EVMs. “In Jalandhar West, students were playing outside the strong room situated in a government school and the strong room while in Phillaur segment, the strong room was set up in Patwar cchool and local people were roaming outside it,” he pointed out.

The AAP leader maintained that similar laxity of SOP came to the fore at Nakodar and Shahkot also. He said that as per the SOP, ‘outer, middle and inner’ security system has to be followed by the ECI. “While the outer security has to be maintained by Punjab Police coupled with videography, the middle security included Punjab Police and paramilitary force. The inner security was to be maintained by the paramilitary force only,” he added.

Phoolka said that DEO Yadav assured him of strict vigil outside the strong rooms. “However, our candidates would put up tents on their own to keep a check on the strong rooms,” he added.
