Now, online approval of building maps - Local Bodies Minister Warns

Ludhiana, July 27, 2017 - With the beginning of the online approval of building maps in the five districts from September 1, the people will heave a sigh of relief as they will no longer be making rounds of the offices of the Municipal Corporation (MC) in this connection.

The five districts, where in the first phase, the online approval work will start, include Patiala, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Moga and Ludhiana.

Officials of the Buildings Branch Department from all over the state were given necessary instructions about the online approval of maps at Chandigarh by Minister of Local Bodies Navjot Singh Sidhu.

The minister and director, Local Bodies, held a detailed discussion with the staff of the building branch regarding online approval of maps. After this, the minister asked officials to pay attention towards the plight of residents, who felt helpless at the hands of the building branch staff, as their work was never done on time.

“Without mincing words, the minister said he knew each and everything about the staff of the building branch. It will be better if they stop making money through illegal means (corruption),” said an official of the building branch.

“The minister has warned all not to indulge in corrupt practices as the department is already defamed because of corruption. The staff has been clearly indicated that if anyone is found guilty, then he/she will be in trouble,” he added.

The minister said during the Cabinet meet next month, online approval of maps was expected to get clearance and it would be of great benefit to the masses.

The building branch has always remained in controversy for corrupt practices. Perhaps this is the reason that illegal buildings mushroom all over the state, especially in Ludhiana.

One of the staff members of the building branch on condition of anonymity said, “If on an average 2,000 building maps are approved, then almost similar number of challans are issued for one violation or the other. Violations are not possible if the staff of building branch does not connive.”
“Generally, minor violations do not catch immediate attention. But, when there are gross violations RTI activists file complaints against such buildings. Besides, many cases of illegal buildings are also being fought in courts too,” he added.
