Speeding Mahindra SUV mows down 3

Sahnewal/Ludhiana, July 28, 2017 - Three persons, who were waiting for a bus near a turn here, were crushed under the wheels of a speeding SUV coming from the Ludhiana side today. The SUV driver fled the spot after the accident.

Those killed have been identified as Baljit Kaur, wife of Baldev Singh of Bhagpur village; Sunny, son of Sabbi of Sahnewal; and Balwinder Singh, son of Jagtar Singh of Bilga village. All three of them were factory workers who used to board a bus from the spot everyday.

The speeding SUV, coming from the Ludhiana side, got out of control and mowed down the three persons near the turn. They died on the spot. The SUV driver fled the spot, leaving the vehicle behind. Eyewitnesses said the victims were flung to a distance by the impact.

Meanwhile, kin of the deceased, along with residents of the town, had staged a dharna on the national highway for more than two hours. The protesters raised slogans against the police. They ended the protest after the police made arrests in the case.

Sahnewal ACP Harkamal Kaur said a case had been registered under Section 279 and 304-A of the IPC at the Sahnewal police station. “The three occupants of the car have been identified as Balwinder Singh, son of Puran Singh; Randhir Singh, son of Ajaib Singh; and Jaswant Singh, son of Virsa Singh, all residents of Bholath village in Kapurthala. They have been taken in police custody.

The driver, Kashmir Singh, son of Karnail Singh of the same village, still eludes the police net. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. Soon, we shall be able to trace the driver and arrest him,” added the ACP.
