Students Protest Liquor Vend Near School

Ludhiana, 11 Aug 2017 - Several youths and schoolchildren protested against the government and the administration for allowing liquor vend to come up near a school.

Members of the Naujawan Sabha (L-Block) and schoolchildren burnt an effigy of the government and administration. They said despite repeated requests, liquor vend had been allowed to come up in the vicinity of Happy Modern School in BRS Nagar. The protesters raised slogans against the administration.

They said according to the rules, there could be no liquor vend or tobacco seller in the vicinity of any educational institute.

A youth said earlier, the vend was being operated from a small room in an accommodation nearby and children, especially girls, would be inconvenienced while going to and coming back from the school as drunk men used to gather near the vend. “We had requested the administration to disallow the sale of liquor in the vicinity of the school and it should be shifted elsewhere. But instead of our pleas, it was given the licence to operate as a full-fledged liquor vend. This has added to the woes of students and staff at the school,” said Arun Kumar, another protester.

He said in fact, the vend opened earlier than the allowed timing. “Liquor vend near the school can imbibe wrong values in the students. As drunkards tend to frequent the area, it also puts a question on the safety of students, especially girls. So we demand that the liquor vend must be shifted at the earliest,” said Harpreet, a protester. “We are not left with any choice but to protest. The administration must get it shifted to a place far from the school. The orders should not just remain in papers, but immediate action must be taken,” said a Class-X student.
