Ahead of polls, four arrested with `19.24 lakh in Mohali

Mohali: Tightening noose around the illegal possession of currency ahead of the Punjab assembly polls, the Mohali police arrested four persons and seized Rs 19.24 lakh in different denominations here at Sohana on Sunday.

According to the police, the accused held with the seized money had been identified as Ranjit Singh (driver), residence of Kharar, and three others belonging to different states.

Inspector Pawan Kumar, SHO of Sohana police station, said, “We have arrested four persons while they were possessing currency in different denominations. The currency has been seized and an inquest proceeding initiated in the matter. All the seized money was later given to the Income Tax Department for verification,” added the SHO.

Police sources said that 759 notes of Rs 2000, 904 notes of Rs 500, 143 of Rs 50, 223 of Rs 20 and 471 notes of Rs10 were seized from the possession of the accused.

The SHO said the four were held at a naka near Bakarpur on the Mohali airport road.

A car was seen crossing the naka which was signalled to stop. During checking, the police team found the currency. The accused failed to produce any documents that could confirm it was legal currency.

According to the sources, about Rs 35 crore has been taken into custody till now after the Code of Conduct was implemented for the upcoming assembly elections.

The police were investigating the matter, while late night checking was in progress by the Mohali police.
