Ex-Army chief J J Singh likely to contest from Patiala (Urban)

Patiala:Amidst reports of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) planning to field a big gun against Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh from Patiala (Urban) assembly constituency, former chief of the Indian Army and Governor of Arunachal Pradesh General Joginder Jaswant Singh, on Wednesday, arrived in Patiala.

It may be mentioned here that the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is seriously considering the name of General (retd) J J Singh to field him against former Chief Minister and Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh. Highly placed sources in the SAD also confirmed about the same. A final word from the party high command ie Sukhbir Singh Badal is awaited.

These sources added that the party had worked over a strategy under which it wanted to confine Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh in Patiala only and not allow Amarinder enough time for campaigning for other party candidates in the state.

General (retd) J J Singh reached the city late in the evening and went straight to the historic Gurdwara Dukhniwaran Sahib along with his close friends to pay obeisance. In the Gurdwara, he performed Ardas for ‘Sarbat da Bhala’ after which he was bestowed with siropa by the head granthi Bhai Parnam Singh and the manager of the Gurdwara Bhagwant Singh Dhangera.

Besides, another siropa was bestowed by the Chairman of the Patiala Market Committee and the spokesman of the party Nardev Singh Aakri. General (retd) Joginder Jaswant Singh was accompanied by Brigadier (retd) Ramesh Bhatia and Bhupinder Singh Sahni and many others.

Later interacting with the media General (retd) Singh recalled his association with Royal City saying his family migrated from Pakistan in 1947 and got settled in Patiala. He recalled that his house was located just behind the famous Capital theatre here. When asked about his contesting election against Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh, he said that he was ready to play his third innings and ready to perform any duty given by the Panth or the Shiromani Akali Dal.

When asked that the royal family had provided place to live to his family and now he was ready to contest against the same family, he said that it’s not the fight against any family as it’s a political fight against a system and the party.

He said that now it was his mission to serve the people of Patiala in a much better way as his roots were still lying here.
