Assembly Election Results 2017 - Modi Magic Brings Saffron Holi In Uttar Pradesh: 10 Points

UTTAR PRADESH: The BJP has ridden a Modi super wave to a massive victory in Uttar Pradesh, with the party now leading in over 300 of the state's 403 seats. Holi has arrived two days early for the party as it celebrates its most crucial win since winning the 2014 national election. The BJP is also set to sweep neighbouring Uttarakhand. Punjab has given the Congress another chance after 10 years and Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party is likely to be the day's biggest loser. Votes are being counted for assembly elections in five states today.

Here's your 10 point cheatsheet to assembly election results 2017:

1. In UP, the BJP is leading in 307 seats, a whopping gain of 259 over its tally of 48 seats in the 2012 assembly election. It needs 202 to form government.

2. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party, which contested in partnership with the Congress, has accepted defeat. Mr Yadav is expected to resign this afternoon.

3. In Punjab, the Congress has taken a strong lead, ahead in 73 seats; it needs 59 for a majority in the 117-member state assembly. AAP and the Akali Dal-BJP alliance are trailing far behind.

4. The Congress has raced ahead in Manipur, where its Okram Ibobi Singh has been chief minister for the last 15 years. The parties are neck-and-neck in Goa, where debutant AAP has failed to open its account.

5. In the hill state of Uttarakhand, the BJP has an unassailable lead, ahead in 52 of the state's 70 seats. The ruling Congress is leading in 14 seats.

6. The mega UP election, held in seven rounds, is seen as a bellwether for the 2019 national election. PM Modi was the face of the BJP's campaign and the party has credited the victory to his leadership.

7."This is a mandate for PM Modi... I could see a surge, it is becoming a tsunami," said union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad of the BJP, adding,"We have surpassed even the Ram wave...the kind of hope, the kind of trust Modiji has generated." He also praised party chief Amit Shah for working"tirelessly."

8. The UP win will be seen as an endorsement of the PM's stewardship of the economy after his high-risk decision last November to scrap 500 and 1,000 rupee notes worth 86 per cent of the cash in circulation, aimed at eliminating corruption and black money.

9. The victory will help improve the BJP's strength in the Rajya Sabha or upper house of parliament where the government is in a minority and has trouble pushing legislation.

10. The Congress has done disastrously in recent elections and if it wins in Punjab and Manipur, it will be the best news the party has had in months, but questions are again being raised about party vice president Rahul Gandhi's leadership after the poor showing in UP, where he focused his attention with an intense campaign.
