'Dipa still deserves a hero's welcome'

KOLKATA: Dipa Karmakar might not have won an Olympic medal. However, she has still made her nation proud, said the Indian gymnastics fraternity.

Joyprokash Chakraborty, who trained Dipa at the national camps and also coached her when she went to Moscow in 2011, said,"I have tears of pride in my eyes when I talk about Dipa. She has such a daredevil spirit. I salute Dipa for her achievement. She performed well. For me, that's as good as getting a gold medal. I also congratulate her personal coach Bisweshwar Nandi."

Finishing fourth, Dipa still deserves a hero's welcome when she returns, said Chakraborty."Look at how bravely she has attempted the Podunova vault! She created an earthquake in the world of Indian gymnastics," said the former coach of SAI.

For him, it is not just about a medal win."An Olympic medal is huge. But Indians should celebrate the risk she took. Finishing fourth in front of such competitors is big too. Dipa has done risky vaults earlier too. But the unfortunate part is that no one took note of it. This time, I would want the country to remember what she has been achieving. I hope India takes note of the achiements of all our gymnastics stars," he signed off.
